THE SAVINS KING.

REDUCES HIS CHAPLAIN STAFF BY A THIRD.

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, June 2. The King will reduce tho number of his paid chaplains from thirty-six to twelve.

A TITLED BEAUTY’S CHAGRIN. London, April 20. Society has been hugely diverted over a recent demonstration of King Edward’s frugality. Wishing to make a handsome present, on his accession, to a beautiful lady of title for whom ho long has entertained great admiration, he instructed a jeweller to submit a number of diamond ornaments for her ladyship to choose from. The King fixed the limit of price at £1,200, but tho lady’s eye was caught by a coronet of double that value. She arranged to tako it, agreeing to pay tho extra £1,200 herself. The King was to be left to believe that it was only worth the amount he had fixed.

The jeweller duly brought the coronet to Marlborough House. The King expressed great admiration of the coronet and asked the price. The jeweller replied £I2OO. Tho King thereupon ordered a cheque drawn immediately, retaining tho coronet. Imagine the chagrin of tho titled boauty when, four evenings later, at a bridge dinner, she saw her £2IOO coronet gracing the raven tresses of another for whom the King’s admiration was warmer than for herself.

Meantime tho jeweller has roceivcd an order from the King for another £I2OO coronet for the titled beauty, who is in an awkward quandary, as she must either pay £I2OO to the jowellor or allow him to pocket tho King’s second cheque. Tho King is said to be completely oblivious of this curious situation.
