MAROONED MUTTON BIRDERS.

MEN LEFT TO THEIR FATE

A DISGRACE TO CIVILIZATION.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Invercargill, last night. The position of mutton birders on the West Coast of Stewart Island is.causing anxiety, since the vessel that was to bring them home is wrecked. It is known that one party of them had only 501 b of flour eleven days ago. Roderique, the owner of the wrecked vessel, is under agreement to bring the people back, but his own total loss, and the difficulty of getting another craft makes him helpless. The Harbor Board offer a tug for £4O, but there does not seem to be the funds to accept it. Some Maoris wired to Mr Parata, M.H.R., to-day for help from the Government.

Probably 60 persons are marooned, some of them young.
