NUHAKA NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

This fine weather and the northerly winds which have prevailed here during the past week have much improved the state of the roads, which are fairly good for riding, but the numerous neglected soft patches make it very unpleasant for driving. Good progress is being made with bushfelling, fencing, and other routine Work. The turnip crops are looking remarkably well, and in some localities the sheep are feeding on them, Mr Rutherford, Government Stock Inspector for the AVairea County, paid a visit to this district last week. Tho Inspector expressed' himself as being well satisfied with tho appearance of the stock throughout the district, - with the exception of a small flock of sheep belonging to a back-block settler, who was requested to put tho sheep through the dipping process. The contractors for the work of erecting a bridge across tho Nuhaka river have commenced placing the piles in position. The public opinion is that a bridge should have been erected first at Stowart’s crossing, where it would be a groat boon to the majority of the settlers and travelling public, and would probably be the means of preventing further loss of life at this treacherous crossing. CRICKET, A match was played on Victoria Day in Mrs Tait’s paddock at Morere betwcon teams representing Nuhaka and Nuhaka North, The latter team wero the first at the wickets, and put together 65 runs. AV. Richardson was the most successful with the bat, and scored 34. The Nuhaka batsmen kept field lively for a time, but Chapman and AV. Richardson soon found out their weak defence, and secured six wickets for 34 runs. A haavy rain prevented further play. Jefferson and Fletcher bowled well for Nuhaka, and Tait made the highest score (10). Ample refreshment were provided by Mesdamos Stewart and Tait.
