Sydney, May 30. At the inquest on the Broken Hill accident, evidence was given that some of the miners objected .to working- in the place where the fall took place, considering it unsafe. The jury returned.an open verdict, but added a rider expressing the opinion that the accident would have been averted if deceased, the ground, manager, and' inspector of mines had taken more care. A relief fund has been started.
Brisbane, May 30. A man named Volkmann has been attacked with plague at SpriughilK . The Pacific cable test house lias been erected on Southport'beach.' : - Mr .Murray Russell, ,of Duncdih,. has been appointed inspector of mines for the southern district.
■ . Adelaide, May 30. Mr Grainger, a member of the Assembly, for AVallaroo, has been appointed Agent-General, at a salary of <£looo, in succession to Mr Cockburn.
The doctors are unshaken in their opinion that the Arcadia’s case was one of small-pox, despite the Melbourne decision. ’
Hobart, May 30. In the Legislative Assembly Mr Patterson moved the adjournment of the House to complain of tlio appointment of Mr Hudson as general manager of railway's. He considered the appointment of a New Zealander an injustice to a local claimant to the position. After a lengthy discussion, the majority of the speakers condemning the appointment, the motion was withdrawn by Mr Patterson. Mr Jauerson subsequently moved that the action of the Government in overlooking the claims of Mr McCormack as general manager did not meet with the approval of the House. Ministers accepted this as a motion of want of confidence, and the House adjourned till to-morrow.
