The American Cold Storage Company proposes io run steamers to Manchester and Southampton, with the object of establishing enormous depots containing supplies of dairy and farm produce suflieient to last Great Britain six months in the event of war.

Brisbane, May 28. The cable steamer Britannia leaves today to make a survey between Queensland and Norfolk Island. A test iiouso will be erected on the island, and the Britannia then proceeds to New Zealand, taking soundings all the way. A test house will also bo erected in New Zealand, but as the northernmost point of the North Island is considered unsuitable, a site will be selected further south. Mr Peak, engineer in charge," accompanies the Britannia. It is hoped everything will be ready for laying the AustralianNew Zealand section of the cable in March next, ancl as that work will not take much time, connection should be made soon afterwards.
