MAIL NEWS.

THE PRESIDENT. (By Telegraph.) (Per R.M.O- Sierra at Auckland.) San Francisco, May 9. President McKinley is now within the boundaries M the State of California, and in two days he will bo welcomed to San Francisco. The President’s tour has been one continual ovation from the time of leaving Washington, and is probably the most remarkable journey ever made by one mau, not excepting General Grant's memorable trip around tho world. The western country in particular has outdone itself in the effort to shine in the eyes of the President and the distinguished party which is travelling with him. Tho train arranged for tour is a remarkable one, and there has not yet been the slightest mishap nor hitch in proceeding.

IN CALIFORNIA. Tho Governor of California and his Staff, with many officials and prominent citizens, met the Presidential party on the borders of California, and the train was soon filled with the choicest specimens of fruit and llowcrs, for which Southern California is famous. President Diaz, of Mexico, was expected to bo a gue.st of California at tho same time as President McKinley arrived, but found it impossible to lay down the cares of office, particularly because of recent illness at El Pasco. From Texas, where a magnificent entertainment had been prepared for President McKinley, Mrs McKinley drove across the Rio Grand river into Old Mexico, where a splendid breakfast in the old Mexican style had been made ready for her. The decorations and furnishings wove sent from tho palace of President Diaz for tho occasion, and Mrs McKinley received elegant presents of Mexican drawn work, and other characteristic

reasurcs. In Arizona the President descended

into the depths of a gold mine, from which he emerged covered with dust. The miners made a demonstration with waving flags, in honor of tho visitors, some fiftoon hundred feet below the surface. The President has been mooting people with true democratic simplicity, and has had no protection anywhere save what is afforded by tho presence of Mr Foster, who goes about with him at all times looking out for his personal safety. THE BATTLESHIP OHIO.

Tho launching of the battleship Ohio, which ostensibly brings tho President and his Cabinet to the Pacific Coast, brings also the Governor of the State of Ohio and staff, with enough officials and important citizens of Ohio to fill a long special train. Mrs McKinley will launch the battleship. ’FRISCO’S HOSPITALITY.

During their stay in this city, President and Mrs McKinley will occupy one of tho most elegant private residences in San Francisco, which has been placed at their disposal. The City is already superbly decorated, and tho electrical display will be remarkable. The visitors will spend a week here, after which they will visit Ihe northern cities, stopping over at Portland, Seattle, and other Puget Sound points. THE PRESIDENT’S WONDER,

The. President has been filled with wonder at beholding the wonderful wealth of productiveness and the magnificence of the country which has honored him.
