CHARGES OF THEFT.
[l3y Telegraph—Brass Association.] Dunedin, last night. Henry Nelson Birth, Clerk of the Court at Queenstown, Ims been arrested on a charge ot theft of iUOO, money belonging to the Government. Ho was brought before the Court at Queenstown and remanded. The proceedings .vorc instituted by tiro Audit Department. Auckland, May ‘dd.
Honry Johnston was sentenced at the Supreme Court to throe years' imprisonment with hard labor on charges of frauds while managing director of the lvauri Timber Company, Mr Earl, accused’s solicitor, applied for probation, or for the case to bo met by a line, but Judge Couolly refused this, saying ho would not make any distinction between Johnston and a person of inferior position who might have no eloquent counsel to defend him.
