Napior, last night. At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr Turnbull, S.M., Walter Smith was charged with having on April 27th wounded his wife, Mary Smith, with ’intent to do her grievous bodily harm, and with attempting to commit suicide. The evidence adduced was practically the same as the particulars given at the time of the assault. The accused was committed for trial on both charges. Wellington, last night. A fire at Smith and Smith’s oil and color warehouse was smartly extinguished by the Brigade just after daylight. A considerable part of the stock was damaged by fire and water. The insurances are :—Building, National, ,£IOOO, Standard £SOO ; contents, North British £ISOO, Manchester and Standard .£IOOO each, National, Royal, and Alliance £SOO each.
The Premier has been advised by the United States Consul at Auckland that the flagship Brooklyn arrives at Auckland on the 24th inst., and then comes on to Wellington, thence proceeding on to Manila.
A supplement to the Gazette appoints Sir Robert Stout as Deputy-Governor during Lord lianfurly's absence from the colony. The Railway Department have received advice that the Rakaia, Gothic, and other steamers are bringing 234 waggons for the Hurunui-Bluff line.
Dunedin, last night. The premises occupied by McLeod Bros, at Kaikorai Yalley, for tallow melting purposes, were burnt down early this morning. They were insured for £4OO in the New Zealand, but this does not cov.er the loss.
