The German - Australian Company’s steamer Bielefeld, which arrived at Sydney recently from Hamburg, had a narrow escape from destruction during her voyage. The vessel is a large carrier of 5516 tons, and-is consigned to Mr H. W. Henderson. The captain states when the vessel had rounded the Cape of Good Hope smoke was seen issuing from No. 2 hatch. All hands turned out to extinguish the fire, a heavy gale raging at the' time. Many tons of water were poured into the hold without effect, and next day the fire was still raging. After consultation with his officers, the captain decided to keep the water playing on the spot,- and the pumping was continued for twenty-four hours, when the fire was got under,
