The electric fire alarms in town were yesterday put in order by Mr J. Stewart, Messrs Williams and Kettle’s stock sals takes place to-day at the Matawhero Yards. Yesterday was the anniversary of New Zealand being proclaimed a British colony. Tenders close to-day with Messrs Clayton Bros, for cutting about 20 acres of scrub and rushes. Telegrams received from Wellington state that the Hon. J. Carroll is making good progress towards recovery. They seem to have a queer idea of penalising cruelty up Auckland way. A man was convicted of cruelty to sheep, and was then let off with a fine of a shilling 1
An important sale of pictures takes place at Messrs Wyllie and Mason’s auction mart at 2 this afternoon. The pictures'comprise a splendid collection, the work of the famous artist, Mr J. Douglas Perrett, and other artists. Prior to his departure for the South, Dr Valentine, Government Health Officer, viewed a test of Messrs Ormond and Ritchie’s patent filter, of which he spoke j in warm terms of praise as an article needed for attachment to tanks. The returning officer of the Murewai booth in connection with the Maori Land Board election, lost the papers on the way to town, but it is not thought this mishap will invalidate the election, as the votes could not have affected the result. The letter which Mr W. Douglas Lysnar read during his address on Monday night was, he desires us to explain, sent to members of Parliament during last session. From the report it appeared that the letter was to be sent next session, whereas copies had already been sent to members. • We direct attention to a notice in another column that at the Hospital Ball on Friday evening the ladies’ entrance will be , from Childers ’Road, and that for gentlemen in Ciistom House street. Vehicles using the Childers Eoad entrance will pass out through Jacob's stables into Lowe street. The Hospital Ball Committee met at the Borough Council Chambers last evening to receive final peports from the subcommittees regarding the arrangements for the ball, which' takes place on Friday : evening next. There ’ was a very large 1 attendance of members, and the reports 1 received were post satisfactory. The J whole of the arrangements are nosy complete, and everything points to a most ® enjoyable and successful evening.
