EDUCATION BOARD
[Special to Times.] Napier, last night. The Hawke’s Bay Education' Board met to-day, and the following business of interest to Poverty Bay was transacted :—Gisborne’s application for £9O under the new regulations for district high schools was held over, pending an inquiry as to whether the school authori-
ties were prepared to abandon their present constitution ; if so, the application to be forwarded to the Government.—Motu’s application for an iron roof was granted. Painting deferred.—Te Karaka’s .applica-
tion for £lO for furniture was referred to
he Apparatus Committee.—Tolago Bay’s application for more accommodation is.to be considered on the allocation of the first building vote. The sum of £5 was granted for levelling the ground.—Tiniroto : Miss Anderson appointed mistress. —The appointment of a teacher at Waipiro is held over, and a relieving teacher is to be sent. —The Board has decided that the midwinter holidays shall extend for fourteen days from the date of the first proclaimed holiday in connection with the Boyal visit, the additional - time being granted in honor of that event. The Wairoa Committee is to be in-ij formed that the Board saw no reason to interfere with Mr Hill’s report on the school. Leave to hold evening classes at the school was granted. The Department forwarded a grant of £l5O to enable it to make temporary arrangements for the furtherance of the scheme to provide for training teachers for the work which under the Manual and Technical Instruction Act will now become part of the public school course. The matter was held over pending Inspector Hill’s report. The Secretary was instructed to take steps for new elections where the committees were not elected on the appointed day.
Mr Westfall moved, in accordance with notice, that no pupil teacher holding an appointment under the Board during the term of his or her employment, shall apply for removal or transfer from the school at which such pupil teacher shall be employed, without first obtaining the written consent of the Board to such removal or transfer. The mover submitted that the present system was wrong and frequently unjust, and that where there were trainers in schools they should be promoted as pupil teachers to fill the vacancies. Bcforring to a recent instance, he pointed out that the appointment of a pupil teacher already’ employed in one of the schools to another one had resulted in confusion.
The Chairman said that the present practice was that no pupil teacher could be removed, transferred or anything else without the consent of the Board. The motion was carried.
