INCREASED RATES
(To the Editor of Times.)
Sir, —I do not mind paying an increased rate if it can be shown to mo that it is essential to a policy of progress, but to my mind the now Borough Council is beginning its progress backwards, and there should soon be some cheap properties in the borough. It is bad enough to see such a large proportion of the funds spent in Gladstone Road, but I am astonished that those who have homes in the borough should now be called on to help to pay for cleaning up the refuse from the business houses. Why not put tho by-law into force instead of piling the taxation on to the householders ? While packing straw, etc., is to be cleared away tree, our wives have still got to throw the slops into the backyard, there being no other means available. After the dreadful speeches made the other day, I anticipated there would bo a field day at Court, and that the names of the offenders would be made prominent ; but alas ! it only means I am to help pay a new rate.—l am, etc., Health.
