i (By Tejegraph—Press Association.) Dunedin, last night. At the Teachers’ Commission, Mr Pryde, Secretary to the Education Board, showed that before Mr Hogben’s scheme was put in operation it would cause an expenditure of £9OOO in staffing the schools and necessary accommodation. He produced plans in support of his contention. The Commission admitted the force of his argument. He also stated that by the new scale the Otago teachers would loso £1758. Inspector Goyen said, mainly owing to the size of the eiassses, female teachers could not teach standards six, five, and sometimes four. The Commission expects to close its labors here on Saturday afternoon, and leaves on Monday for Invercargill. The Commission completed to-day taking the evidence of Mr Pryde, Secretary of the Education Board, the only other witness being Mr P. Goyen, Inspector. Mr Hogben stated that to bring the salaries of the teachers of tho colony up to the Otago scale, which was the highest in the colony, a sum of £5335 would be required, in addition to what was required in the original scale. Mr P. G. Pryde showed that there were nine assistants in Otago who would lose £6O per annum or over by the or fginal scale.

Inspector Goyen’s evidence dealt largely with the qualifications and certificates. '

In view of tho valuable evidence secured, the Coinission will extend the sitting in Dnnedin over Monday.
