The hoisting of tho Union Jack at tho Exhibition yesterday was tho signal for a similar operation throughout tho schools of the Commonwealth. Seven thousand schools, representing six hundred and fifty thousand scholars, unfurled the flag. At the same time, at a signal given by tho Duchess pressing a golden key, which was afterwards presented to her, a message stating what had occurred was flashed to New Zealand, and similar messages wero sent throughout the Kingdom. Mr Barton has received from tho Now Zealand Premier a cable of congratulations on tho openiug of Parliament, and has replied thanking Mr Seddon for his generous congratulations.

It would cause keen disappointment if they did como overland, and, as proposed, proceed from tho railway station to Government Houso in a closod carriage. Ho proposed that the Government yacht go down tho rivor and land thorn, and they would thus bo ablo to carry out tho original programme.

Sir Gordon Sprigg, tho Capo Premier, has informed tho Corporation of Capetown that tho city’s reception of tho Duko of York must bo representative of tho whole colony. If there was any possibility of risk they would inform the King. The Government is urging tho Capetown Corporation to take strenuous steps to clcanso the city.
