THE “KING’S” WISH.
WOULD ENTERTAIN THE DUKE WITH A TANGI. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, last night. Communications are now passing between Government and “ King ” Mahuta and Henare Kaihu in reference to a canoe demonstration, etc. Mahuta is strongly in favor of a welcome after tho Maori s|yle. He says that his grandfather (Ropotatau), and his father (Tawhiao) both revered Queen Victoria, and he considers that the most important thing on the Quoen's grandson landing here is to make appropriate reference to the death of Her Majesty. Accordingly he proposes that a select party of Waikato women attired in native costume, with their hair dressed with sprays of byeorodium, a Maori emblem of mourning, and bearing green houghs in their hands, should he assembled in some suitable place when the Duke lands, chanting a tangi_ song lamenting thc passing away of “ Kuini Wikitoria. Tho women would also perform Powhiri, tho customary song and dance of welcome to visitors.
