POPULATION OF COLONY.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, last night. The preliminary 'census returns for the colony have been completed, and show that the population is 778,430, as against 626,65 Sin 1891, an increase of 146,781 in ten years.
The population of the counties is 417,990, of boroughs 350,775, shipping ,521, adjacent islands and lighthouses g 39, Chatham Island 206, Kermadecs 8. The population of the Xorth Island is 391,148, as against 340,641 in 1896 ; South Island 381,829, as against 362,2369 gtawaxt Island 253, as against 252,
