OUR SOLDIERS.
BACK FROM THE WAR. [By Telegraph—Press Association.] Christchurch, last night. The returned troopers were entertained at luncheon to-day, The Mayor presided. The Premier, in his speech, said that he had received a telegram announcing the arrival of the Seventh Contingent in South Africa, and he hinted at the possibility of sending another contingent, as the sooner the war was ended the better for the colony and Empire. He stated that Lieutenants Lewin and H. Somerville had- been promoted to captaincies.
Colonel Jowsoy, Major Crawshaw, and Captains Somerville and Lewin responded to the toast of the contingents, which was received with the greatest enthusiasm. After lunch the men marched through the principal streets, which were densely thronged with cheering crowds. This evening the troops were entertained at a conversazione, and the Northern men left for Lyttelton at ten p.m.
A meeting of tho Contingent Committee was held at the Borough Council Chambers yesterday morning to consider what steps should be taken to give the returning soldiers'a fitting 'welcome, Anjpngst those present were: The Mayor, and Messrs Macfarlane, DeLautour, W. L. Rees, Miller, Kennedy, Robinson, and A. Rees. The men are expected to arrive by next Wednesday’s steamer from South, and it was decided that the men should remain’on the steamer until the return of the second' taurich, arriving at the wharf at 9.30 a.m., when a short'formal reception would]take place, speeches being delivered by the" Mayor, and Messrs DeLautour and Rees. The bands to be requested to attend,also the Fire Brigade. Other South African Volunteers who have previously returned are to b‘d invitod to share in the welcome. The proceedings will take the form of a social* with musical items and a few speeches. Messrs Kennedy, Miller and Rees were deputed to draw up a programme and make arrangements.
