DEATH OF A CHIEF.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Nelson, last night. News has just been received of the death of Renata Te liawharu, at Whangarei, Croixelles, aged 87. Ho was the last chief of the Nga Tikoata tribe, and was a connection of Te Rnuparaha, his father having come south from Waikato. He was highly esteemed by Europeans, and did bis best to elevate his race. He took much interest- in the establishment of a Maori school at Corixellcs. He assisted in piloting the expedition ships into Nelson Haven.
