AUCKLAND SPECIAL.

PERSONAL. (Special to TniES.) A u.-kland, May 7. Mr R. S. Noble-Crr, ibell, of_Gisborne, arrived from Chr'Tijhureh on Sunday. "Whilst passing tli . jgh Wellington Mr Campbell very thoughtfully laid a wreath on the grave'of the late Mr G. D. Barclay, who died of fever at Gisborne a fortnight ago, and who is now lying sleeping in tho Wellington Cemetery. Mr and Mrs Fred Martin, of Gisborne, left for Sydney in the Mararoa lost' evening. Mr Finlay Drummond, an old Gisborno boy,' left for Chicago by the 11.M.5. Yentura, to-day.

Among the passengers to Rotorua today were Mrs Parker, Messrs Parker (2), Misses Parker (3), of Emerald Hills, near Gisborne. Mr Parker and family purpose visiting Sydney next week, and will bo present at the welcoming of the Royal party at that city. Mr Noble Campbell left in the Waikare for Gisborno to-day. He intends sailing for Sydney by the WaikarePloaviug here a fortnight lienee, and catching tho s.s. China at Sydney, en route to London.

THE CIRCUS-A FIGHTING MANThe Mararoa is convoying Fitzgerald Bros.’ circus to Sydney. Nicholson, an Aucklander, at one time tho champion light-weight fighter of New Zealand, is one of the leading lights of the circus, and is in charge of the lions and tigers. Nicholson will bo remombered for his clever fighting at Gisborne somo years ago, and also for causing the death of a man in Auckland named Forgie in a fight to a finish five years ago. Operations commenced at 8.30 and ceased at 1 o’clock the following morning. SPORTING.

Yesterday afternoon the Gisborne Times sporting correspondent, accompanied by a well-known Gisborneite, journey to Ellerslie to visit the well-known stables of Messrs Nathan. Their rising two-year-olds are perfect beauties. A full brother to tho champion Nonetto, and a sistor to Beddington, and a half-sister to La Gloria were also in this stable. Next season these thoroughbred two-year-olds arc bound to play a prominent part in two-year-old events. Rosella and Beddington were looking rather weary after their experience in the tidal wave on board tho Mapourika last week. Mr Jim Buchanan kindly showed the visitors around tho stables.

A PUGILISTIC CONSTABLE. Ex-Constable McConnell, of Auckland, a pugilist, with an unbeaten record, lias been appointed to act as Sergeant during the Royal parties’ visit to Rotorna. HAWERA RACES.

The following horses should run well at Hawera to-morrow (Wednesday) :—Railway, West Guard ; Hack Hurdles, Haydn ; Tawhiti Handicap, Bones and Blacking ; Cup, Crusoe ; Wailii Handicap, St. Ada ; Mokoi, Taplow ; Telegraph Handicap, Fakir and Siandra. AN AMBULANCE REQUIRED.

Tho Auckland Racing Club’s Committee mot yesterday afternoon, and con firmed tho decision of the stewards in paying over the stakes won by Battleaxe and Boreas (first and second moneys in the Century Stakes). The Committee of tho Auckland Racing Club have decided to call for tenders for an ambulance to be kept on their property at Ellorslio. THE ROYAL VISIT. Tho Reception Committee, according to “ Zamiel ” in the Auckland Star - , in connection with tho Royal visit, are making strenuous efforts to hold their Native carnival on the Auckland harbor, despite the efforts of tho Hon. Jas. Carroll to throw cold water on it. “ Zamiel ” further states that Captain Mair, well-known on the East Coast, and who came into prominence during the Te Ilooti trouble, and the Hon. Hemi Carroll, will be in charge at Rotorua to explain to tho Royal visitors the wonderland of Rotorua.
