SCHOOL MATTERS.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—l' was rather surprised to see a paragraph in,this morning’s Times regarding a letter received by me from Mr Marshall, as the letter is iuserted in such a way as to lead the public to think that it came from the Chairman of the School Committee, which I emphatically deny. It appears to me that the letter is published with a view of showing that the Makauri school is as efficient a school as the Matawhero and other schools. Perhaps the writer of the para- . graph will cause to be published for the good of the public the reason why' so many children go from the Makauri school every morning to Gisborne, Matawhero, and Waerenga-adiika ; also. why the Standard IV pupils at Makauri can only get 7 and 8 marks out of a possible 70 ? i have no doubt all this arises out of ignorance of the Standard regulations, but we are not so ignorant that we cannot seo that what is Makauri’s loss is a <weat gain to the other schools in the district, as it helps to swell their percentages, and of course that touches a tender part, the purse, which is the root of all evil. Hoping the next person who writes about this dispute will have the pluck to sign his name, and not cause paragraphs to be printed so as to mislead the public, and with duo "apologies for taking up so much of your valuable space, I am, etc., Thomas McGregor, Makauri. May 6th, 1901.
