WATER-SUPPLY SCHEME.

INFORMATION REQUESTED. The discussion at the Borough Council meeting on Tuesday night made it appear that the engineer engaged, Mr Mestayer, was coming upon the Council by instalments for further authority to report on subjects not included in the requirements originally set out. This was referred to in our leading article on Saturday, and Captain Winter has been questioned in reference to the subject. He informs us that the idea is quite erroneous—that at the outset Mr Mestayer supplied him in writing with details of what he required information upon. Those details included reference to the pipe lino to Mangarueka. From the way the matter came up at the Council this appeared to be quite a new departure, but as explained was originally contemplated. Of course, if the Council chose to vary that they would be at liberty to say that such information was not to be obtained. The Council has decided to leave that to Mr Mestayer, and not to interfere with him, but it is only fair to explain the position as far as that gentleman is concerned—that he has not asked for anything that was not contained in his original request, and in the list given to Captain Winter. That gentleman commences on Wednesday to obtain the required information in to the distance of the pipe line to Mangarueka. We are informed t hat the Waihirere catchment area is a gqud deal less than has always been thought to be the case, and therefore there is the more ueed of obtaining full comparative information in regard to Mangarueka.
