A SHOCKING CASE.
A CHINAMAN MARRIES A CHILD HE IS ALLEGED TO HAVE *, RUINED. DILEMMA OF THE POLICE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, last night. A Chinese named Fong Ilee was arrested some days ago on a charge of indecently assaulting a girl under fourteen years of age, and remanded. On the case being called on at tho S.M. Court this morning it transpired that the child had in tho meantime been married to defendant, while he was on bail. The officer of the police applied for a further remand to allow him to take legal advice as to the position. Counsel for the accused, while not opposing the remand if the police proposed to support the charge with independent evidence, contended that before tho remand was made the prosecution should admit that this girl was now married to accused, and was not competent as a witness against him. The police doubted whether the marriage was legal. . Counsel said that the consent of tho parents had becn'givcn, and in that caso a girl over 12 years or anybody over 14 could legally marry. A week’s remand was granted.
