SCHOOL MATTERS.
i.To the Editor of the TiMEri.) Sir, —Will you kindly allow space for a note in reference to a'statemenj made by a parent at the meeting of householders at Makauri. As reported in your issue of tho 24th inst., a householder stated “ that a child of bis, after passing Standard II in this school was back to Standard II when removed to Matawhero.”
What I want to say, sir, is this, that most readers of the above statement may not be aware that the Matawhero School is examined in October, while the Makauri is examined in ’ March or April, so that a child passing the second in March or April at Makauri and removing' immediately afterwards to Matawhero, could not work with the Matawhero third, who would already have been five months in their Standard, while the pupil from Makauri would have no acquaintance with Standard 111 work at all. In such a case the wisest course is to place the child in Standard II till the school is re-classified by examination. Hoping you will find space for tliis explanation, I am, etc. Jno. Marshall, Matawhero.
With regard to the above, the parent referred to called at the Times office on Saturday afternoon, and asked us to make a correction in the report of the meeting. What he stated at the meeting was to the following effect; “ That a child of his, after passing Standard U. at the Makauri school, was sent to the Matawhero schoo where she was put back to Standard I."
