HIGH SCHOOL QUESTION.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

Timavu, last night. A conference of educationists was held to-day, representing the Education Board, the High School Board, the staffs of the High School and the three primary schools at Timn.ru, and the Inspectors, to discuss the request by Timavu main school to have the school raised to a district High School. Both Boards opposed the application, on the ground that to comply with the request must damage or destroy the existing High School. The School Committee was not represented except by the Headmaster, who contended that the question of a High School should not be brought into the discussion, as all he wanted was to obtain a qualified teacher.to attend to the Seventh Standard pupils, and to carry them on in commercial work. It was pointed out that this was inconsistent with the Committee’s request to have the school made a District High School, for which the Act provided a syllabus of secondary subjects. ’ Nearly all the speakers advocated the State paying sufficient capitation to permit of all pupils who chose to do, so after passing the Sixth Standard to go to the High School free of fees, and a resolution was adopted accordingly.
