We had knocked off work at the time, and there is no one to blame. It was a pure accident. | In consequence of Captain Ronlerill retiring from the sea at the end of this month the following promotions take place' among Messrs Richardson and Co.’s steamers :—Captain M'Allister, of the Kahu, take command of the Toroa ; Captain Petersen, of the Fanny, takes the Kahu ; Captain Nelson, of the Weka, takes the Fanny ; and Captain Carlson, of the Fairy, takes the Weka. We regret to record the death of Mr Geoffry Barclay, of the Bank of Australasia staff, which took place at the Hospital on Friday evening. He was admitted to the hospital about three weeks ago, suffering from typhoid fever, and for a time made most satisfactory progress. On Tuesday last, however, pleurisy appeared, and it would seem that Mr Barclay must have had some heart trouble, which was touched by his illness. At 8 o’clock on Friday evening he complained of pain, and medical aid was promptly sent for, but though Dr Craig arrived with all speed his services were unavailing, and within ten minutes he was dead. Mr Barclay was the son of Captain Barclay, of the Mines Department, Wellington, and has a brother engaged as reporter on the Wellington Post. He was highly esteemed by all who knew him, and the news of his death occasioned much sorrow in town. Mr Barclay was a member of the Gisborne Rowing Club’s representative crew until he had to discontinue training owing to illness. Mr Miller received the following message from Mr Saxby of the Napier Rowing Club : “ Regret to hear about Barclay. Kindly send wreath for Napier Rowing Club and oblige.” The body was taken to Wellington yesterday for interment.
