The returns have now been completed for the borough and suburbs, and are as follows : Whataupoko—- 1901 1896 Males ... ... 590 Females 546 *» 1136 934 Haiti— Males 358 Females 341 , 699 561 Gisborne— Males 1422 Females 1313 2735 2327 Totals 4570 3822 Increase ... 748 The following returns from country are to hand ; Matakaoa : 35 males, 13 females ; total 43 ; increase, 8. • Awanui: 74 males, 53 females ; total, 127 ; increase, 36. Piritarao : 124 males, 80 females ; total, 204; increase, 60. The population on shipping was also counted on census night, and proved to be 58, as against 33 when recorded in 1896, an increase of 25.
