SHAKING UP THE BRITISHER.
AMERICAN ACTIVITY IN LONDON. BRITISH STRONGHOLD INVADED. [By Telegraph.] (Per Mail Steamer at Auckland.) Despatches from England announce the arrival there of Charles T. Yorks, of Chicago, who will build the Charing Cross and Hampstead , Railway. Mr Yorks stated to an English interviewer that he was anxious to see how tho British would take to American methods, as ho considered Loudon offered a great field for modern and American fashions in transportation facilities. The railway already projected will run underground to a point several miles beyond Hampstead Heath. It is also proposed to run a trolley lino seven miles further. Mr Ycrkes is accompanied by Mr J. M. Chapman, American Electrical Engincor, and Mr William Clark, Foreign Manager of the General Electrical Company. The people on tho western side of tho Atlantic are watching with much interest this invasion of the British stronghold by American capital. Mr Yerkcs is practically owner of all street railways in the city of Chicago, and has unlimited, resources at his command.
It is presumed, though without specified authority, so far, that the construction of the Charing Cross and Hampstead road will bo but an entering wedge, to bo followed by an entrance into the great metropolis of an extensive electric car system, which will revolutionise the habits and customs of Conservative British citizens in a marked degree.
