By Telegraph—Press Association. Oarnaru, last night. The Court of Enquiry into the stranding of the yacht Ariadne gave its decision this afternoon. It held that there wps no evidence to suppoit the assumption that the vessel was designly stranded. The captain had not exercised due care, and had been guilty of a grave error of judgment. His certificate was suspended for three months, and he was ordered to pay fifteen guineas expenses. Invercargill, last night. Messrs Horace Bastings, Chas. Longuet, and F. F. Stone has been nominated for the Mayoralty. Timaru, last night.
Two candidates have been nominated for the Mayoralty," Councillors Macintosh and McNab. Pour of the six wards have returned two candidates each, and two wards will require polls. The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board adopted estimates to-day totalling £6360. The cost of the last two years respectively was £6041 and £6046, of this £l7ll and £IBOO were for Charitable A : d. The Board’s Secretary estimates relief by old age persiors at about £3OO. Of this £96 was collected from the inmates of the home. The inmates of the home cost 8s 2d per head per week. The statement in connection with the Board’s store for outdoor relief in Timaru shows that, after paying -all expenses and suuving goods and rations on order, there will be but little in credit. Auckland, last night. A German, aged 55, named G. 0. Rinders, has been found dead. His wife, who had just returned from the country, discovered the body', which had been dead about a week. Wellington, Inst night. The Chief Justice this morning sentenced John Houghton for the forgery of the names of clergymen and others to eighteen months’ hard labor. TYster, who pleaded guilty yesterday to false pretences, was sentenced to twelve months’ hard labor. Ngahuia Matu was committed for trial to-day on a charge of breaking and entering another Maoii’s house at Opaki. Napier, last night Messrs J. C. McVay and Samuel Caraell were nominated for the Mayoralty. For the Council there are 25 candidates for the 12 vacancies. The number includes Mr G. H. Swan, the retiring Mayor. Mr E. H. Wi ,,: ams, President of the Hawke’s Bay Ciicket Association, was presented with a pume of sovereigns on leaving for a trip Home. He has promised £2O a y'ear for three years towards the expenses of a professional coach, and Mr Moeller has offered to hoard and lodge the coach for twelve months free of charge. Tauranga, las), night. A man named George Frederick Porter lias been arrested at Tepuke on a charge of false pretences. He recently ariived from Auckland, and represented himself as a man of fortune. He bought a farm, and spent money lavishly. Other charges of a similar nature are pending.
