EDUCATION BOARD.
[Special to Times.] Napier, last night. At a meeting of the Education Board to-day, the Chairman said there had been no meeting of the Select Committee to consider the Inspector’s reports on the various schools. ' Some of these required attention, the condition of one or two of the schools being seriously bad. He suggested that the reports should be held over till next meeting of the Committee, which was agreed to. FRASERTOWN. The request to have a comer of the school ground granted as a site for a library was granted at a peppercorn rental. An application by the Chairman of the Committee to have a male teacher appointed in place of the present mistress was held over, pending the election of a new Committee.
GISBORNE. Mr Hill reported that he had no objection to conducting scholarships by means o£ numbers instead of names, but if the system were adopted he could take no [ part in the supervision of the examination, and a supervisor would have to bo appointed in Napier.—lt was decided to adopt the proposed system, and to appoinl a supervisor.
t HASTINGS. Miss Eoiic has been appointed first - assistant mistress. > MAKAURI. Miss Ledingfield is to be recommended ' for a license to teach. ’ PATOTAHI. Miss Cantlc has been appointed mistress. TIXIROTO. Mr Jamieson's resignation was accepted. TOLAGO BAY. A monitor is to bo appointed. WAERENGA-A-HIKA. The request to have Miss McClure’s status raised owing to the increased attendance was refused. WAIPIRO. Miss McKenzie’s resignation was accepted. WOODVILLE. The recommendation that Miss Ecid bo
appointed first mistress was adopted. The application to have a District High School established was refused, there not being a sufficient number of pupils over the Sixth Standard. THE COMMISSION. The Education Department intimated that they proposed to nominate Mr Hill on the ltoyal Commission on the Colonial Scalo of Teachers’ Salaries.—Approved. TRUANT OFFICERS. The Department wrote that in all probability a bill would be introduced next session to provide for the police undertaking the duties of truant officers. MARAETAIIA SCHOOL. The Department wrote sanctioning the expenditure of Tb 74 12s 6d in erecting the Maractaha school.—-Letter referred back, with a request for a larger sum. TECJINICAL HDUCATION. The Department intimated that the Board’s application for a technical school was under consideration, and that the Inspector of Technical Instruction would confer with the Board, the Conference to take place on Thursday morning. PUIHL TEACHERS.
Sovcral communications from tho Now Zealand Educational Institute, with reference to pupil teachers’ holidays anl examinations, and their attendance at tho training school, wore referred to Air Hill. ’ INCREASED SALARIES. The Secretary for Education intimated that tho amount available for Hawke's Bay under the proposal for increases to teachers salaries was ,£ll9B 2s, or D2OO more than was previously stated. After due consideration of tlie Board’s suggestions, ho forwarded for approval a revised list of proposed increases. The rates suggested wore on a too liberal scalo, while tiic salp.rios proposed by tho head teachers, with few exceptions, were not, in tiic opinion of the Minister, sufficiently high. Adjustments had accordingly to be made in the list. The rates proposed for pupil teachers were as follows :—First year 120, second .£3O, third .£lO. fourth .£SO (including ox-pupil teachers); a lodging allowance of J£lo per annum would also be granted to pupil teachers and expupil teachers living away from their homes. It was pointed out that there were certain anomalies in tho proposed increases, the names of certain teachers entitled ’to increases being omitted altogether.—The matter was referred to the Selection Committee. UNIFORM BOOKS.
A length and exhaustive report from Mr Wcstall, relative to uniform books, was roforred to tho Inspector.
