AUCKLAND SPECIAL.

THE FORCES. [Special to Times.] Auckland, last night. It is now considcod a certainty that Colonel Robin, w' i is now on his way home from South Africa, will be appointed Commandant of the Forces in New Zealand in place of Colonel Pole-Ponton. SPOUTING. Ideal, Evening Wonder, and Metiura were on board the Zealandia, which left for Gisborne and Napier to-day. By the same steamer a number of Gisborne gentlemen, who have been attending the Auckland races, are returning. A DETECTIVE’S TRIP. An Auckland detective sails by the Elingamite next Monday to bring back Henry Johnston, arrested in Sydney on a charge of misappropriating from .62000 to £3OOO of the Auckland Kauri Timber Company’s money. Johnston, as I have mentioned in a provious telegram, was managing director of the said company. He was for some years partner in the well-known Auckland firm of Carr, Johnston, and Company. Of late lie was a sleeping partner, and receiving £SOO annually from that firm. He had private means, and received £I2OO annually as magaging director of the Kauri Timber Company. His arrest has caused a great sensation in the city, he being esteemed as one of Auckland’s trustworthy and reliable business men. Johnston’s life has been as open as the day. Until his present false step his character was unblemished and unstuped. Much symi patliy is felt for liis wife and family, they one and all being highly respected , people. The Johnston Brothers are well j known throughout Now Zealand, one especially being well and popularly known in Gisborne.
