THE COMPANY SPENT MONEY UNNECESSARILY.
[By Telegraph—Press Association.] Wellington, last night. To-day the Midland Railway Coinmigsion took the evidence of A. Brown, ofWellington, who had a contract undorono of the English contractors for that portion of the Midland line from the Stillwater' side of the Arnold bridge to the Rcofton side of Nelson crock. Tho contract prico was £31,521 15s 3d, and all that Mr Brown got out of it was £853, representing profits of about a year and a half’s work. Ho expressed the opinion that money was spent unnecessarily by the company, owing to the supervision being'ontrustcd to a Swede, who failed to recognise th 6 difference between tho conditions of payment for labor in the colony and in his own country.
It was intimated that other witnesses were on their way to AVellington for ox-, animation, and tho Commission thon ajourned its open sitting for a day.
