AUCKLAND SPECIAL.

A UNIQUE APPLICATION. [Special to Times.] Auckland, last night. Miss Abbott, of Auckland, a young lady of about 17’ years of age, and sister to Abbott, the jockey, has applied for a jockey’s license. SHOCKING CASE. In sentencing William Woods, who pleaded guilty at the Supremo Court to-day on a charge of indecent assault on a girl of 13 years of age, His Honor said he wished it to be distinctly known that in cases of this sort he would in future pass a much heavier sentence than lie intended to do in this case. It was a most scandalous thing that young girls, mere children, could not bo safely loft alone without some wretch taking advantage of them. In this case it appeared that the prisoner had not used violence, but it was evidently his intention to havo intercourse with the girl had she permitted it. The girl, who was only 13 years of age, had been left alone at her house, tho other inmates of the house having gono to church, and the accused had evidently been aware of this when ho followed her, and took liberties with her. Five press men are to bo accommodated on the cruisers accompanying the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall'on the Ophir. No one is at present, for SQiiie incomprehensible reason, supposed to know ivlio they arc, but the London correspondent to a local paper ventures to predict that they will be found to bo representatives of Reuter’s, tho Central News, tho Daily m "Wra»h, the Standard, and either the Morning Post or tuu 'j Graphic. Certain naughty halfpenny-worths are raising Cain over their exclusion, but tho King was so disgusted oyer their behaviour at Osborne during the Queen ! s iljnesg that this combination is very unlikely to receive high favor from the Court during the present reign.
