The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, APRIL 15, 1901. BOROUGH ELECTION.

The number of nominations received for tbe forthcoming- Borough Council election is a gratifying indication of increased interest in the affairs of the Borough. And the number of the candidates is the more satisfactory for the reason that such a good choice is offered, all the candidates being men who might well be chosen for the position. 'The names of two gentlemen who have done good work in the past —Councillors Nolan and Skeet—are absent from the list, while on the other hand wo find the names of several ex-Councillors, Messrs Whintay, Bright and A. Taylor. It is also pleasing to note that somo gentlemen who have not previously offered their services as Borough Councillors are to be found on the list. There is important work to do during the coming twelve months. The most important, perhaps, to deal with will be that of waterworks and drainage, a report upon which should be to hand at an early date. The views of the sitting Councillors on this subject are well known, but it will bo essential to get some declaration from, the other candidates to enable the voters to give an intellgent vote on the subject. Then there will be the question of a more comprehensive scheme for dealing with public works. The old Council has very tardily come to the conclusion that was pointed out many months previously, that a substantial saving in interest could be effected by going into the question of loans ; but there is a good deal more yet to be done. It does not require an expert knowledge for anyone to see that the Borough staff, excellent as it is, could do much more effective and economical work if it could bo done in a more comprehensive way. At present the staff has to go from point to point doing patchwork, which, of course, meana that the work of patching is never done. There will be plenty for the incoming Council to take in hand in dealing with such matters, to say nothing of the other important questions of abattoirs, sanitation, electricity, etc.
