The North Otago Times states that there are several cases of scarlet fever in Oamaru. As usual, Gore shootists have placed to their ’credit the killing of many tamo ducks (says the Mataura Ensign), doubtless in mistake for the wild variety. Duckponds on several farms have been the scene of considerable slaughter, much to the regret of the owners. With a view of taking full advantage of fine weather during the threshing season, dn enterprising machine-owner in the West 1 Eyreton district, Canterbury, has fitted a small dynamo to his engine. This supplies an are lamp of sufficient brilliancy to enable work to be carried on at night. The Bannockburn correspondent of the Alexandra Herald states that Mr Thomas Toms had a narrow escape from poisoning last week. lie had taken a drink of water from a small spring, and soon afterwards he became ill, and commenced vomiting. ! Examination of the spring disclosed the fact that the putrefying bodies of several rabbits poisoned by toxa were in the water. ' A child, Nettie, the IJ-months-old daughter of Mr Charles Martin, Malmsburv, Victoria, was the victim of a peculiar accident on March 21. The little girl was missed for a few minutes, and, on a search being made, her body was found tangled in the rope of a swing. She had evidently been swinging, and by some means had got, the rope twisted round her neck, When the' body was discovered, life was extant.
