The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, APRIL 13, 1901.

BOROUGH ELECTION. By noon to-day, nominations are to be in for the Borough Council. It

must now bo well understood that the whole of the members retire, and that nine have to be elected. Up to the present, the election has not excited much attention, but, no doubt, the interest will increase as the contest comes due—assuming, of course, that there will be a contest. There is need for a more progressive policy in Gisborne, but that can never be brought about unless the householders evince greater interest in what is being done. It is not sufficient to grumble occasionally. It would be well if the ratepayers showed that they were all the time taking been interest in the affairs of the Borough. It is better for the town, for the Council, and for everyone else concerned. A keen contest for the nine seats would help to infuse new life into municipal affairs, and the more candidates there are the better it will be. As for the Mayoralty, the indications are that Mr Townley will again be elected without opposition, but we hope that next year heed will be given to the opinion of those who hold that the mayoral office should go round]
