Sydney, April 12. Consequently on entering Federal polities, Air G. il. Reid has resigned the leadership of the State Opposition. _ The members have eulogised his leadership. At a meeting of the Federal Frcctrftdc and Liberal Committee called to consider

the question of continuing the organisation for future election work, Air Reid, in his speech, said that freetraders had captured the Federal Senate, and very nearly captured the House. He predicted that ‘in time they would secure for the Commonwealth the most sound and liberal tariff in the world. The other speakers condemned the method of appointing Air Fcgan. Sir W. Lync is surprised at the hostile criticism of Mr Fcgan’s appointment. 110 thinks tlie critics are speaking without knowledge. Adelaide, April 12. The Register, commenting on Mr Fcgan’s appointment-, says even the most indulgent of critics find it impossible to endorse Sir W. Lync's action. Brisbane, April 12. The Courier says if the appointment is allowed it will be ropcated by other Ministers to secure support, and the worst form of patronage will be brought in. In every way it is indefensible, and a:a injustice to the public service in all the States, a reflection on purity of political life, and an insult to Australia. Alclbourne, April 12. The Federal Cabinet, at a long sitting, discussed various draft Bills. In tlie selected part of the House for the sitting of the Federal Parliament extensive alterations are to be made for press accommodation.
