CHRISTCHURCH AND THE DUKE

CASH WANTED FOR JUBILEE MEMORIAL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Christchurch, last night. It lias been decided to fall in with the suggestion of tho Premier that His Excellency should ask the Duke of Cornwall and York to lay tho foundation stone of the Jubilee Memorial in Christchurch, Tho memorial will commemorate tho Queen as well as tho South African Contingent. Some trouble is being experienced in raising sufficient funds. Two thousand pounds are wanted, and so far only fourteen hundred are available. Efforts with regard to a canvass has boon disappointing, there being very little response from tho country districts. The Jubilee Committee at a meeting to-day decided to ask tho labor organisations to meet it, and discuss the raising of funds before a personal canvass was undertaken, the latter course being objected to on account of the national character of the memorial.
