PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
THE UNION. [By Telegraph—Press Association.] Dunedin, last night. At a pro re naia meeting of the Presbyterian Synod of Otago and Southland, held last evening, final steps towards the consummation of the union of the Presbyterian Churches of New Zealand were taken. Several obstructive motions were moved, and numerous points of order cropped up, the decision of the Moderator being twice reversed by a vote of the Synod, but though there was vigorous debate and strongly expressed opposition, the resolutions were carried with but three dissentients. It was stated that a bill concerning the disposition of the properties of the Church, adopted at last Synod, I had been taken charge of by Mr McNab, | member tor Mataura, and the Union | Committee will take all steps consequent ! and necessary upon the passing of Bill. I A conference of Union Committees will be held, probably in Christchurch, to arrange details. The Synod by resolution fixed the last week in October as the time for the inaugural meeting of the Union Assembly, the decision as to the day and hour being left to Conference. In all probability the day will be Thursday, the ; Ust of October, and the occasion cannot bo other than of importance. From the remarks made at the Synod it is evident ' that some appropriate and striking ceremonial will be determined upon, and that as far as possible the proceedings will correspond to those which have characterised the recent union of the Free and the United Presbyterian Churches of Scotland.
