DISGRACEFUL AFFAIR.

Auckland, last night. An oxciting scene occurred on EUcrslie racecourse yesterday. Tho police were arresting one Charles Clarko on a charge of committing a breach of the peace. He became violent, and a, melee ensued. The prisoner attempted to disengage himself from the officer, who was getting a bad time from the crowd. Three mounted constables rode into the crowd, some of whom seized the bridles of tho horses, endeavored to push them off, punched them in the ribs, and pulled the tail of one trooper’s horse, which roared and struck tho prisoner on the head with its fore-feet, inflicting some wounds. One of the trooper’s horses accidentally knocked down a woman, Mrs Webb. After an exciting struggle, the police got their man to the police rooms. Mrs Webstor, who is 50 years of ago, was taken to the hospital, suffering from a scalp wound. The crowd at the finish were in rather adangerous mood. Oranges were thrown at the police, and ono or two of tho rougher sort on the fringe of tho crowd had lemonade and ginger-beer bottles as reserve ammunition if needed.
