The fire was caused by a device in. the window, intended to symbolise the Easter season. Tho insurances include: Tho National of Now Zealand £2OOO, Now Zealand £3OOO, Standard of New Zealand .£ISOO, North British .£2OOO. Mr John Crosswell, of the National Insurance Company, Now Zealand, states that since the beginning of tho year the insurance offices have lost nearly £350,000 in Australia and New Zealand. Sydney, April 7. The Antillian, with tho last draft of the Imperial Contingent, has sailed for tho Capo. The City Club boat tho New Zealand bowlers by 80 to 58, winning every rink. Mr Feagan, Stato Minister, has been appointed Federal Under-Secretary for Home Affairs.
Word has been received from New Zealand that the owner of the racehorse Advance has quoted a price to Sir Rupert Clarke. The figure is with-held, and Sir Robert Clarke’s intentions are at present unknown.

The mail steamer Prince Regent Fuitpold has been signalled from Wilson’s Promontory with the port shaft broken. Sho requires a tug. The steamer is inward bound from Sydney. Sir G. Turner, when before the Federal Commission, said that if the evidence was strong of the desire of New Zealand to join, lie thought it would not only be admitted as an original state, but receive special terms to meet its isolated position. He considered it useless to expect any commercial reciprocal treaty to be arranged if New Zealand elected to stand out.
