PERSONAL.
Dr and Mrs Hughes returned from Auckland by the Elingamite on Thursday. The Minister for Lands, Mr T. Duncan, and the Hon. J. Carroll arrive at Wairoa’ to-day.
Mr Jardinc, headmaster of the Ormond school, left on a trip to England on Thursday. Mr 11. Bruce has presented the Gisborne Rifles with a handsome double rein bridle, to be shot for on Monday afternoon next. Miss Rosie, daughter of Mr J. Rosie who lias been filling the position of assistant mistress at the Waipawa district school, has been selected from 27 applicants to fill a similar position at the Hastings school. Mrs and Miss DeCosta, and Mr II DeCosta leave for England and the Con' tinent by the Waikarc on Wednesday next. J Mr 11. Martin Smith, of the local Land and Survey Office, left yesterday for AVai roa, where he joins the Hons. Duncan and Carroll, and conducts them on their tour n that part of the district. Mr Gardiner achieved a great success at Matawhcro sn Thursday night by the manner in which the cantata “ Under the Palms ” was produced. Mr Gardiner had taken great trouble in the preparations and was enthusiastically supported by the members of the Matawhcro Presbyterian Choir. Dr Pomare is at present engaged visitmg the native settlements in the district with a view of reporting on the sanity conditions of the same. Mr J. Brooking leaves for Auckland this afternoon en route for Whakatane where lie holds an election under tlio Native Councils Act. The following rinks from the Gisborno Bowling Club leave for Napier to-morrow evening:—Messrs Ambridge, Massey, Robinson, Bright (skip), Morgan, Quigley T. Adair Gaudiu (skip), Orr, Colebi-ook’, Aaair, McGowan (skip).
