ROWING.

INTER-CLUB CONTEST,

A SPLENDID RACE, [By “ Stroke.”J

The first of the annual races between the two local Bowing Clubs took place last evening, when the 10-stonc crews representing the two clubs met. There was a large attendance of spectators at tho Bowing sheds, on the bridges, and at the various points of vantage along the riverbank. Mr W. Fraser officiated as starter, whilst Mr A. E. Kennedy acted as judge. The following were the crows : Gisborne. Poverty Bay. A. Sherrill (str) J. Martin (str) 11. Robinson (3) A. Pool (3)

11. Faram (2) J. Smith (2) 11. Bright (bow) J. Parker (bow) The crows were sent away to a splendid start, being almost level for the first two hundred yards, after which the Poverty Bay crow began to gradually forge ahead of their opponents, and at tho Hospital had an advantage of nearly a length. The blue and whites were still a length to the good at Bees’jetty; but, on approaching the footbridge, the Gisborne crow spurted, and at the bathing-shod were within half-ft-lcngth of the leaders. From this point, a stubbornly contested race ensued, both crews rowing splendidly. At Barton’s jetty, tho Poverty Bay crew had still a slight advantage, and despite another determined challenge on the pArt of tho Gisborne crew, they maintained it to the finish, and thus won a splendidly contested race by half-a-length. The crews rowed well together and kept excellent time throughout. At the finish of the race three hearty cheers were given for each crew b.y the large crowd of spectators who had assembled at tiio sheds.

This evening two more races will ho rowed, when the senior and junior crews of each Club will try conclusions. The members of tho crews are Requested to bo at their respective sheds at 5 o'clock slmt-p, so as to enable the races to be got over before darkness sets in.
