SUICIDES.

Berlin, February 2S. Prof. Heller, of Kiel University, the renowned expert in mental diseases, made autopsies on 300 suicides in five years, and now states that he found the brains of 43 per cent, showed distinct malformation ; 29 per cent, of the remainder were suffering at the time of their death from acute febrile inflammation ; 143 of the aggregate had organs diseased by alcoholism.

Following are the Customs returns for' this port for the quarter ended March 31st: —Spirits, .£1232 12s 4d ; cigars, .£24 10s 6d; cigarettes, £1665s ; tobacco manufactured, ,£26S 12s 9d ; Australian wine, £B6 19s lid ; other kinds, £37 os 3d; ale and beer, £49 2s 8d ; tea, £2O 10s ; coffee roasted, £1 8s ; sugar, £258 13s 4d ; goods by weight, £144 2s 7d ; goods ad valorem, £7lO 7s; other duties, £59 6s 3d; beer excise, £2OO 15s 6d ; total, £3680 16s Id. The figures for the first three quarters of the year are:—June, £3207 17s 8d ; September, £3155 11s 2d; and December, £3915 8s lid. The total for last March was £1377 2s Bd, and for the previous March quarter £4090 19s lOd. The beer excise for the month of March in last year was £24 13s 6d, and for the quarter £159 10s 6d.
