EX-PREMIER REID HAS OVERWHELMING MAJORITY. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Received 12.39 a.m., March 30. Sydnoy, March 29. 8.52 p.m.—The polling for the first Federal elections is being conducted very quietly throughout tho city and country. Great interest was manifested in tiio city to-night. King Street was crowded. Mr Rsid was returned for East Sydney by an overwhelming majority. i The return from the Hume up to nine o’clock show that Sir W. Lyno is having a hard tussle with Mr Goddard, tho freotradc candidate.

Mr Cook, Postmaster-General, had an easy victory for Parramatta. Sir William McMillan had a largo majority over the Protectionist candidate for Wentworth. Out of 29 seats, the Freetraders are leading for 17, and the Labor candidates are leading for throe seats. Received March 29,11.40 p.m. Sydney, March 29. The fight for tho seats in tho Lower House has resolved itself into one of free trade versus protection. Mr Bruce Smith, former member of tho Parkos Administration, scored heavily over the Protectionist opponent. For tho Hume Mr Lyno leads b.y 110, but the re- 1 turns arc incomplete. For Canoblog Mr Brown, Labor candidate, is leadin'!' at,. Wise by 190. The following protectionist ministerialists have been returned :—For Bland 1 Mr Watson, labor ; Hunter, Mr E. Barton, 1 unopposed; Eden and Monaro, Mr Chap- ' man defeated Mr Wood, Minister of Justice ; Gwydir, Mr Cruickshanks; Richmond, Mr Ewing; Riverina, Mr Chanter defeated Mr Ashton, member of the State Legislative Council.

The following freetraders have been returned East Sydney, Mr Reid, majority 4048 ; North Sydney, Mr Thomson ; Dailey, Mr Wileys; Parramatta, Mr Cook • Lang, Mr McLean; Parltes, Mr Sydney Smith, a member of Mr Reid’s former Cabinet; New England, Mr Lonsdalo ; Robertson, Mr Willis ; Barrier, Mr Thomas, labor. _ Independent Labour :—Darling, Mr Spence. ° Mr Bruce Smith has been returned. West Sydney, Mr Hughes (Labor); for Wentworth, Sir William McMillan, and ’ for Illawarra, Mr Fuller defeating Alexander Hay for Newcastle; Gilbert' for i Macquarie. 11.47 p.m.—The Senate returns are a long way from completion so far. Thof following arc leading :—[Freetraders ; Gould, Pulsford, Millcn, Walker, Gray • Protectionist: O’Connor. ’ The returns from the other colonics arc not yet to hand.
