Mr AVitheforcL received a telegram yesterday from the Premier stating that the draft contract with the Colonial Ammuni-
tion Company for the supply of ammunition to the Government had been approved of. The Conciliation Board at AVa’hi adjourned before taking evidence in order to cite all the important companies on the Hauraki goldfield. On the application of the AVaihi Company, the Board resumes at Paeroa on the 18th. It refused to allow solicitors to appear. Invercargill, last night. James AVinterbum pleaded guilty to a series of thefts, Including a bicycle at Timara, money from fellow lodgers, and a cornet belonging to the Salvation Army. He elected to be dealt with summarily. As he is now out on probation for bicyclestealing at Christchurch, the Magistrate, Mr McCarthy, sentenced him to two years’ ha-.'d labor.
Dunedin, last night. A waterspout at Strath-Taieri on Sunday night washed away the switch-back road and the centre road between Springs and the Book and Pillar. All the culverts in the neighborhood were badly damaged, and fences destroyed. The residents in the immediate locality likened the flood to a stream three times the width of the Taieri river.
AVellington, last night. In reference to the Sydney cablegram, the Agricultural Department states that swine fever disease still exists in the colony, but is restricted to one or two piggeries, and appears to be dying out. Mason and Barraud represent the AVellington Chess Club at the championship tournament at Christchurch at Easter. It is understood that the Government proposes to create a new volunteer office of quartermaster-general, to rank next below the Commandant, and that Colonel Newall will be installed into the position when relieved of the command of the AVellington district by Colonel Porter’s return from South Africa. The Government have instructed Mr Matthews, Chief Forester, to start a nursery of 30 acres between Trentham and the Upper Hutt, from which to supply young trees to the forest reserve on Bimutaka range.
