ISLANDS OF THE PACIFIC.

ATTITUDE OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. Per Press Assooiation—Copyright. Sydney, March 27. Mr Barton states that he is keeping a very watchful eye upon the Islands of the Pacific. He says that the policy of the Federal Government in respect to the New Hebrides is that they wish to. see such stops taken as to secure that no land passes in such a direction as may tend to fortify claims in respect of interests antagonistic to those of the Empire.

AN ALARMING PROPOSAL. TO STRENGTHEN THE FRENCH IN NEW HEBRIDES. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, March 27. A rumour from what is described as an exclusive and secret source reached the Hon. Mr Barton'a few days ago that a suggestion had been made that the difficulty over tlio Newfoundland French shore question should be settled by handing over to France the British rights to the New Hebrides in exchange for French concessions in Newfoundland. Mr Barton interviewed Lord Hopetoun, who despatched a cable to Mr Chamberlain enquiring if such an arrangement were contemplated. Mr Chamberlain replied that there was absolutely no foundation for the report.
