AUCKLAND SPECIAL.
COLONEL PORTER’S APPOINT MENT. (Special to Times).
Auckland, last night. Tho appointment of an officer to accompany the Seventh Contingent has been anxiously awaited here during the pasl week. Several officers throughout Nerv Zealand were mentioned, but through the
medium of tho Gisborne Times the first intimation was given of the likelihood of Lieutenant-Colonel Porter, of Gisborne, taking command. It was announced definitely to-day that this Poverty Bay officer is to accompany the Seventh Contingent to tho Cape, and probably go to the front. The selection was a wise one, and was favorably received in Auckland. Old Poverty Bay identities should remember tho valuable active services renderod by Lieutenant-Colonel Porter in the days gone by.
CHIEF SURVEYOR. It is rumored that Mr Gerard Mueller, of Auckland, is to be appointed Chief Surveyor. It is officially denied that the appointment is yet made. MR CARROLL. When the Hon. James Carroll returns to Wellington from Wanganui, he will accompany the Minister for Lands to the East Coast through Hawke’s Bay and other Maori districts.
