Tho Hon. J. Carroll is going to Wanganui to attend a large meeting of natives at that place. The Waikare’s passengers for Auckland on Saturday included Dr and Mrs Hughes, Mr and Mrs Julius Caesar. Mr 11. Quinn, of Messrs Brown, Stewart and Co., of Auckland, arrived "by the Te

Anau yesterday. ' Messrs A. F. Kennedy, G. It. Wyllio, C. Necnan, and J. Nicoll returned from Napier on Saturday. The Education Board have appointed Mr Spurrell to relieve Mr Jardine at Ormond. Mr C. W. Davis will act as judge at the Waiapu Sheep Dog Trial Club’s Meeting, to bo held this week at Tokomaru. Mr Fordhain, who represents the Wellington (inn of Messrs G. Turnbull and Co., is at presont visiting Gisborne.

Mr C. It. Vickcrman, District Engineer of the Public Works Department, will visit Gisborne at an early date.

Col. llestill, commanding officer of the Salvation Army, and Major Evans, are at present visiting Gisborne, in connection with tho army harvest festival services. Mr E. Cunningham, the popular representative for Messrs Tyree and Co., of '"Christchurch, arrived in Gisborne on Saturday. Mr Ahlficld (of Messrs Ahlficld Bros., Dunedin), accompanied by Mrs Ahlficld, arrived by the Waikarc from the South on Saturday morning. At the bowling green on Saturday afternoon tea was dispensed by Mesdames Price and Ferris. There was a largo attendance of members and visitors.

Mr A. Y. Boss, junr., formerly of Gisborne, has been appointed chairman of the committee appointed to free library and reading-room for Waihi. Mr Walker, one of the proprietors and editor of tho Hawke’s Bay Herald, arrived in Gisborne on Saturday. He intends, if the weather is not too rough, to proceed overland to Napier. Mr John Cuilen, of Hastings, who had tho misfortune to break his thigh some months ago, is almost completely recovered from the result of his accident, and will bo discharged from the Napier hospital this week.

Miss Morton, the well-known painter of animals, has left Auckland for Napier, to paint Cocur do Lion for Captain ltussoll. She will afterwards go to Palmerston North to paint some animals for Mr D. Itiddiford.

At St. Mary’s Catholic Church last evening, tho Ilev. Mr Father Augustine preached an eloquent sermon upon the object : “Is ono religion as good as another.” There was a crowded congregation, and tho music was of a special character. Mr S. Fletcher, the winner of the first prize (.£4500) in Tattorsall’s consultation on tho Newmarket Handicap, is head clerk in Mr E. It. Bowler’s legal office, Gore, and was formerly in Mr Barton’s office, Ifawera.

Mr Jtoskrudgo, of Wellington, a gentleman well known in commercial and bowling circles, passed through Gisborne on Saturday on route for Sydney. Mrltoskrudge is one of the New Zealand team of bowiers which is about to visit England.

Master T. Nicholson, late of the Gisborne Cadet Corps, has boon elected first lieutenant of the Newton East School Corps. Master Nicholson will bo remembered as tho promoter of the cadet troop at the local celebrations over the relief of Mafeliing. At St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church yesterday, the Ilev. J. G. Paterson preached two excellent sermons to largo congregations, the subject of the evening address being “ The most unkingly epitaph over written —Buried with the burial of an ass.”

At tho annual meeting of the Ladies’ Golf Club tho following officers were elected : Hon. secretary and treasurer, Miss M. llces ; captain, Miss Matheson ; committee, Mesdames A. Ilccs, Morgan, H. Bull, King, and Miss Adams. The season opens on April (ilh. At Auckland on Saturday evening a smoke concert was tendered by the Auckland bowlers to Messrs D. E. Clerk and J. V. Dingle, to wish them bon voyage on their departure for England to take part in the Bowling Tournament. The gathering was largely attended, and tho proceedings wero characterised by much enthusiasm.

Mr A. McCabe (who represents the well-known Auckland firm of Messrs Partridge and Co.), accompanied by Mrs McCabe, arrived from the South by the Waiknro on Saturday. Mr and Mrs McCabe have just returned from a tour of the Australian colonics, whore they have been spending their honeymoon, having been married at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Sydney, in December last. While stepping from the platform to receive a bouquet from some of her admirers in St. Mathew’s Hall, Hastings, on Thursday evening last, Miss Large had the misfortune to sprain her ankle. It was at first feared she would not bo able to appear again, but after a rest she bravely rc-appearcd and sang her succeeding numbers.

Mr L. M. Harris, late of Wellington, who is about to proceed to South Africa, recently lost his pocket book in Dunedin, containing valuables to the amount of .£I3OO. The loss was advertised and it is reported that a littlo girl picked up the purse, which was handed to tho owner. On examining it, he found that two £SO notes wove missing. Trooper Bruce, one of the Tokomaru representatives of the Fourth Contingent, returned to Gisborne by the Wnikarc on Saturday, having been invalided on account of fever, lie has seen a good deal of service sinco he left Gisborne. Trooper Bruco speaks very highly of Lieutenant Arthur, whom he refers to as a level-headed and reliable officer, having the utmost confidence of his men. Like many others tho returned trooper states that “ there is no place like Now Zealand,” and he docs not desire to return to South Africa. Air and Mrs C. Eosic arrived from tho South on Saturday morning, where they have, been spending their honeymoon. They have the congratulations of their many friends. A presentation of a pleasing nature was made to Mr Eosic at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Sunday-school yesterday, when lie was presented by the 'members of his class with a very handsome silver dessert dish, accompanied with the following address : —Mr C. Eosio : Dear Sir, —We, the undersigned members of your Sunday-school class, heartily welcome you and Mrs Eosio to Gisborne, and earnestly trust that the Giver of all tilings ‘will long spare you both to have a happy and peaceful life, and that your labours with ns in the Sunday school will not be in vain, but that in future years wo will look back with pleasure and gratification to the spiritual instruction received at your hands as the exponent of “ God’s Word.” We ask you to accept on our behalf a small souvenir of our respect and esteem, and wish you and Mrs Eosic all sorts of happiness. “ May Love's sweet chimes which brings your wedding day, Be joy bells that shall ring within your hearts for aye; And may your wedding day bequeath in future years Blossoms without a thorn to strew your path with flowers.”
