New Plymouth, last night,

The agitation against toll-gates in the Taranaki County has reached an acute stage. Information has been received that at Puniho the gatekeeper was locked in his house, while several persons carried off the gate, which has not yet been found.

It is reported that another gate at Keimana was similarly treated. This extreme step was taken in view of the impending sale of the right to collect tolls for the year commencing April, The police are investigating the case.
