The Cup furnished an exceptionally close contest between Ideal and Skobeleff. The former was made favorite, with Palaver coming next in public estimation. It was a very good betting race, Materoa and Battleaxe also having many supporters. As the horses swept into the home bend both Skobeleff and Ideal were brought forward, and it was left for these two to decide the issue. Hewitt, on Skobeleff, pressed his mount hard, and it looked as if he were going to get in front, but Ideal lasted long enough to win by a short head. The victory was very popular, the winner being heartily cheered on returning to the saddling paddock. Skobeleff quite ran up to expectations, though the son of Stepniak had been unfortunate in his races in having to bo content with second places. Mr Stead’s geldis showing better form now than he has at I any stage of his racing career, and is evidently of more superior quality than sporting people wore apt to give him credit for. Palaver, good mare that she is over a mile and a quarter, found the extra quarter of a mile just too far, whilst Materoa did not run so well as anticipated. Battleaxe was slightly in advance of the field as the.flag fell, and passing the stand the first time the son of Hotchkiss still led the way, with Ideal, Skobeleff, Palaver and Materoa in that order. Bounding the bend Skobeleff improved his position, running alongside of Battleaxe, the rest of the field well up. Along the back stretch the field was well togothcr, but rounding the turn for home Ideal, Skobeleff, and Battleaxe all made an effort, whilst Palaver and Materoa wore also going strongly. Entering the straight it was any horse's race, Ideal and Skobeleff coming vory fast, with Battleaxe and Palaver in closo pursuit. A slashing raco ensued up the straight, Skobeleff and Ideal running together, but the latter drew out in the last few strides, and got home by a long nock from Skoboloff, Battleaxe a good third, and then came Palaver and Materoa. Timo 2.40.
Totalisator £1132, dividend £2 19s,
